My preference?  Comparison.

If they both agree on the same occurrence/date/etc, then you can be fairly sure the information is accurate.

You're talking about the witch-hunts.  During the various Inquisitions.  Most of it was little more than paranoid village folk, jealous/covetous neighbors, and people with grudges.

Just curious; is the author Vivianne Crowley (several of her books mentioned in the reading list) any relation to Aleister Crowley? Looked through this feed and didn't see anyone ask that, if already answered then sorry for the redundency.

Almost everything I've found says that she has no relation to him.  There was one site claiming she was related to him, but it was quite questionable.  So it's possible that she may be, but it's much more likely that she's not.  After all, Crowley is a fairly common surname, especially in Ireland.  Here is an interesting thread from another forum about Aleister Crowley's children.  I can't certify that everything they say is 100% accurate, but it's an interesting read.

I am addicted to my kindle and noticed Scott Cunningham's Wicca: A guide for the solitary practitioner is only 1.99 right now.  I have the hard copy but for 1.99, couldn't pass it up!  There are many titles available for kindle.  I just finished The Goddess is in the Details by Deborah Blake, it goes beyond Wicca 101 books teaching you how to live Wicca spiritually everyday vs only esbats and Sabbaths.  I also have Grimassi's Sprit of the Witch on kindle....did I say I LOVE my kindle...

well, I did some research for where to start from and most people recommended S. Cunningham's Guide for solitary practitioner. So I got it. Now I'm focused on  A Witch's Bible by Stewart Farrar and Witchcraft Today, Gerald B. Gardner. And than - we'll see.....

I am impressed.  The Gardner book especially but I am partial to his work.

I have to be honest, I'm not a huge fan of the Farrars.  There were a lot of rumors and nastiness going around about them and their "school" and their "camp". 

While I think there are a lot of things accetable within one's religious or spiritual practice, those things do not include the harming of other people whether mentally, emotionally or physically.

I don't know how many, or if any of the rumors were or are true, but there were enough people who disassociated themselves with them that I have my wonders.
