Don't know about how the regular people where you live look upon them but here Drac a lot of church's name them as satan worshippers.  Most people here know them for the charity works . Mostly it is for hospital care for children and food and housing for low income families. The local one has a food delievery service for the elderly .
 
Their symbols are on our money too Marisol. It is said that 9 of the founding fathers were Freemasons and 11 more had some affiliation with the Masons.

To us they are merely masons and thats pretty much it. We make jokes but nothing derogatory. Funny handshakes, rolled up trouser leg, cucumber under your oxter.... just silly things.

Part of their mandate is carrying out charitable works too, same as what you yourself mentioned.

Hard to say mate, we tend to just let these things just chug along as they please pretty much. One that does spring to mind is the Rotary club.

Algonquin Scouts , it was a local boys club that taught outdoor skills from track to making a canoe . 5-8 years old for that . Then for a few years I was a P.A.L. = police athletic league , swimming and shooting for me. Then thing took a turn for the better , girls , been hooked on em ever since.
 
What was the Boys Brigade all about ? .

The boys brigade seemed to concentrate on christianising their members, it was very church oriented. I didn't stay with them for too long. The uniforms were smart though.


::ETA;  It was also a bit naval, we had to learn things ship based. It was all about instilling christianity, self discipline and respect.

Your Algonquin Scouts sounds like a version of our scouts, we had camping and outdoor pursuits too.

It was sponsored by the Algonquin Club , the town where I was born had at one time been the seat of the Algonquin Nation. Everything we did was in the native tradition . It was cool , instead of badges we got feathers , wore buckskins ( no real , made of cloth . Knifes , tomahawks and our little bows and arrows , rabbit was about all we could hunt with them.

No hunting for us though, even rabbits. Its illegal here.

Dude I'm talking 50 years ago , you can't hunt rabbit ,what about waterfowl , can you still fish.  Think it's time you moved .

We can still fish....LoL  We are not allowed to bow-hunt here tho. Any huting has to be done with a gamekeeper with a high powered rifle, under supervision.

I have often thought of moving, certainly couldn't afford to do that tho.

Now that's a bunch of bull, do they supervise you when you go fishing too. Maybe we can get you asylum over here  .

Arf Arf    No but on some rivers you need to have a licence to fish a stretch of water.

It might be nice to just be able to take a notion to just..... take off into the woods with a bow a quiver full of arrows and spend the weekend under canvas.
