Title: Who is your favorite deity and why?
Post by: Mitch on July 02, 2010, 05:19:32 PM
This question, I find, rather appeals to me because I like hearing other opinions on the subject of deities. My favorite has always been Diana Goddess of the Moon, it just seems right to me and I feel a closeness with her as well as relaxed in her presence.

Anubis.  Because he is the Keeper of the Gate between this world and the Realm of the Dead, as well as the judge of souls.  He can be your best friend or your worst enemy, depending on his mood, or depending upon your actions...much like my own personality.  To quote a line by the Anubis character from Stephen King's "Kingdom Hospital"-- "I do you a solid, you do me a solid.  That's the way it works."

I chose Anubis as my patron God because, well, he's a dark God, a god of Death, and I like the darkness, nighttime, the shadows, death, necromancy, and anything else morbid and macabre.  I have a statue of Anubis on my altar, as well as one of Bastet, the Cat Goddess.

Goddess, there are so many...

Well, my top TWO would be:

Athena and Artemis.

They're of equal stature in my eyes. They're both daughters of Zeus - the Greek lord of the heaven and the earth, the father of gods and men.

My reasons:
Athena is the goddess of wisdom, and she sprang forth from her father's head ready for war. I like her because she's prepared and always has a solution. For example, the challenge of Arachne: (The following has been taken from Greek Mythology of the "Get to Know Greece" series, published by Michalis Toubis S.A.)

"Arachne was a young woman with great skill at weaving and embroidery. Everyone admired her work and frequently said she had been taught by the goddess Athena. But from arrogance, she refused to accept that and challenged the goddess to a competition. Athena appeared disguised as an old woman and began to counsel her to be modest, judicious and pious to the gods. Arachne replied with curses. During the competition that follwed, the one weaver competed against the but the subjects Arachne chose for her designs offended the gods. Thus she came to suffer the rage of the goddess. Her humiliation led Arachne to commit suicide. She hung herself, but to keep her from dying, the goddess changed her into a spider ("Arachnid") which is constantly spinning its web."

Artemis is a goddess of the moon and the goddess of the hunt. I like her because she was the patron of the legendary Amazons, a tribe of women who lived apart from men and paid Artemis special honour. I also like Artemis because, when she was a girl, she begged Zeus to allow her to remain unmarried so she could roam the forests freely.

Rhiannon - When I sleep under her rays at night I can feel my strength being restored for the next days challenges.

The Lord and Lady.  I've never had a need for any Others.

Those "Others" you speak of are just names given to the Lord and Lady to make them more personal.  It'd be like if you knew a couple whose last name was Smith, and everybody who didn't know them personally called them "Mr. and Mrs. Smith", but since you DO know them personally, you call them "Bob and Helen."  Make sense?

I must admit I find this quite funny as I had NOT red your post before posting my questions. I guess we have something in common!

This posts helps a little with the meaning to each goddess.

The Great Old Ones, like Mighty Cthulu...are far more ancient than T-Rex...plus...T-Rex was mortal, and is now extinct, with his bones on display at science museums all across the world.

I'm rather fond of Loki myself, although in actual practice I work with non-specific powers.  I have a fondness for the Norse pantheon due to my upbringing.  :)  I like Trickster dieties just because.

Title: Re: Who is your favorite deity and why?
Post by: Snake-Man on July 11, 2010, 06:31:27 PM
I have been keeping tabs on this post and pondering the question it presents. After careful thought, I have come to the conclusion that I don't have a favorite deity. I have favorite people, favorite foods, favorite skivvies; but not so much a favorite Divine.

I see each God or Goddess as a part of the whole. Like petals on a flower, cloves on a garlic bulb, pages in a book . . . and they all have something I can appreciate. It isn't until you see all the petals, read all the pages, eat all the garlic that you can appreciate the summation of Divine (and in the case of the garlic, why the Divine invented Tic-Tacs).

I follow the Morrigan because while I don't particularly care for war, I have long familiarity with death and destruction. But She is not the only star in the sky and She understands my need to try and wrap my head around the whole picture.

Everything exists. Every path is valid. In the small things can the large be measured. Pizza is sacred food; Pepsi, the sacred elixir.

Thus are my learnings.

Well said.

I can see n00bs being cornered by the more terrifying members of this forum and ret-conning their stupidity out of their posts in order to be spared the wrath. Of course, that leads to lying and chicanery and a general sense of disgust with the whole thing, I would think. If you can edit other people's post, I can see n00bs tinkering with spelling and grammar to make people look stupid . . . then again if you can see who made what edit when, I don't think that would be much of an issue. Hmm. Except for some people being more idiotic than others and not paying attention to that fact.

Only Elders and Mods have the ability to edit other peoples posts. The edit option gives a member the ability to edit their own posts.

Not to split hairs here, but if Quetzalcoatl is your favorite deity, then you technically favor Quetzalcoatl over the rest of the deities that you may or may not work with.

Favor, being the root of favorite.......

Yah, it does that.  Although I hope is it isn't incurable, so perhaps more like an antibiotic resistant infection?

It's one of those can't please all the people all the time problems.  The forums are privately owned and run, so we can literally do whatever the heck we please and to hell with any nay-sayers.  The thing is that what we constantly attempt to do is have an educational, relaxed, family ok, nice place to be.  Of course different people's opinions vary on what would constitute that.  In the end it comes down to the collective best judgment of the admin.  I'm hoping most of our members think we do a pretty good job.

I have to say, after more study of the greek deities and having a profound discussion over it with two of my friends, my favourite deities have changed slightly.

Whenever I mention Hecate to the aforementioned friends, they instantly think of a crone, the keeper of lost souls, as described in Greek mythology. I have to constantly explain to them that Hecate was also a maiden-like mother figure, the goddess of childbirth, in Thracian mythology - this is the aspect I connect to. Selene has always been one of my closely linked to goddesses, and Persephone just shows the two sides of my life - the scientist and the Wiccan. It's difficult to comprehend which is which sometimes for me; they slightly blur into one being - aka me.

The one god I'm drawn to is Dionysus... probably due to his link to the vineyard. I like wine! ;D

I still stand by Artemis, but my friend Alex (one of the friends who I often talk to about mythology) has swayed me slightly in the view of Athena.

Technically, in England, I'm legally allowed to drink if it is within my own home, and under the supervision of responsible adults, from the age of 5. I'm not allowed to buy alcohol until I am 18, or 16 when bought with a meal in a restaurant. You see? I know it all :P

Jesus Christ and John Barleycorn both kinda tie for top god for me.  I must like the letter J.  I also like deities with alcoholic blood.

Of course I'm rooted in Christianity, however I happen to have a mentalistic love affair going on with Loki. ;D Hahaha

(also called Loki Laufeyiarson), in Norse mythology, the evil trickster fire god, always mischievous, deceptive, and scheming, and one of the most well-known characters in Norse poetry and saga. As his name is derived from the Germanic root of flame, Loki is believed to have originally been a fire spirit. He was a trickster figure, and, as a shape-shifter, could become different animals at will. He was the father of two sons, Nari (or Narfi) and Vali, by his wife, the Asynjur goddess Sigyn (Siguna). But since he could also assume the shape of the opposite sex, he could give birth, and he had a number of other offspring in this way.

I would have to say that my favourite deity would have to be Eos of judgment, beacuse of he power he could wrap everthing around his finger, but such power he takes care of, as is why he may be favourite.

Or even Empress the goddess of dreams.

As her sligghtly twisted innocence, but really I do like these two the best ;D ;D.

I choose The Morrigan... I like how she can bring wisdom out of chaos since I have been known to do that ;) I also like how she is the Goddess of War simply because to me this makes her a strong and shows she can handle herself. I have always felt a connection to her.

Cheater.  That's not a favorite.  That's three.

And what of the "sovereignty" aspect?

And because I was looking it up for wholly unrelated reasons, here's some interesting info on them.

Lol if you choose to view her as three. I just see Morrigan :) As for "sovereignty" it depends on the situation. I choose to have it over my path in life, but as with all things it has its place. And thanks for that article, I have seen it before as I was researching different gods and goddesses a few months ago. And also, Thanks for making me think... I love to think and learn and especially to be around people that feel the same way. I say, "Always ask why!" If you dont you may never find out ;)

My favorite, at least the one I feel most drawn to, is the goddess Athena. I've always felt a connection to her ever since i first read a book on Greek mythology in middle school.

She has a lot of traits and talents that i admire and would love to do/be. She is wise, a weaver, a warrior and mets out suitable punishments like nobodies business.

Gotta respect a Goddess like that.

Arianrhod and Mabon

Arianrhod picked me. For quite awhile I didn't know it was her. I was looking everywhere other then in the direction I needed to be looking. Her name kept confidently yet quietly coming up in my mind for years. I honor her natural rythems and she has been there for me everytime I had asked for her help. It didn't matter if it was for animals, family or myself. My creativity and wisdom has been coming out to play now. I feel strong confident loving energy from her. Her energy says " I am here. I always will. I love you. I always will." Mabon, well his energy is like the perfect dad for me. Calm, strong, divine but makes me feel just as divine when I am working with him even though I am farrrr from it.  :-pI feel like he supports the gearhead in me as a female. He is like the father that gives all his harvest of love no matter how much his child screws up. He will sacrifice himself just to see you succeed. No matter where your path leads you, he will always be a beaming proud papa because your you.I could go on and on about the both of them. Thanks for reading this far. :)

Carmenta. Goddess of childbirth and protector of women and children. I have always had a strong connection with her and represents the things I stand for. Plus, I think any of us who have had children can appreciate her presence and those thinking of having children could draw on her power during this difficult time :)

Bast-I connect to Bast through my love of cats, and also feel a special connection to her.

Well, my conception of God hasn't directly been inspired by reading books on Mythology. I've been inspired by my soul's experiences that come up to breathe when I am focused. These experiences show me a very clear picture. It's an image of a young, blue girl with flowing blue hair that twists and extends infinitely. She is very playful and bursting with love and energy. She wants to love everything and everyone. She's very intimate and intense, but also extremely independent. She is tresss, the eternal life force. She is comprised of two very general 'sub-goddesses': the virgin and the whore. The virgin is focused, pure, and incorruptible. The whore loves all and is always full of desire and chaos. Together they create a balanced force. I am the virgin-whore paradox; I don't see a strict division between what is me, and her.

Almost two years after originally posting, I know that my answer for this question has changed.  In fact, I don't really have an answer for this question because of my newly found relationships with many deities in and out of my self-proclaimed pantheon which may or may not be as accurate as I once believed.

From my small interaction with Cerridwen who found interest in me after my mentor and I grew closer all the way to the present where my roommates deity, Jesus is currently trying to guide me.  I'm self-proclaimed pantheon is hellenic, although I've had very little interaction with any of the deities from within that pantheon if at all.

If I had to name any specific deity which I've turned to a lot recently it has to be the Moon better-known as the Goddess.

I use the God and Goddess when practicing Wicca.Or they are also called The Lord and Lady.

I've tried searching for other threads about pantheons and deities, but this is the closest I could find. A lot of what I've read encourages one to choose a pantheon and work with the gods & goddesses, even if just temporarily. Also, I've been cautioned not to "mix" them (like, using one God from Egyptian mythology and a goddess from Greek culture). In choosing a pantheon, it seems a little confusing to me. My first choice was exploring Celtic mythology (because I am half-Irish) but then it seemed confusing because of the Welsh, Irish, etc. That being said, I was immediately drawn to Rhiannon because of her tale of justice, being a goddess of horses and can be linked to fairies. She also draws her power from animals and nature, and appears as horses and birds.

Cernunnos is my male deity I am drawn to, because he is the Horned God and King of the Forest and animals, he represents cycles and seasons and just seems nice...not intimidating like some others out there.

Sucellus appeals to me as well, representing domesticity and prosperity, and above all, good times (a god who represents beer and libations? Yes please! LOL). He is often with his female partner Nantosuelta, who represents both fertility and re-birth and her symbol animals is a raven, so she is thought to help people cross to the Otherworld (their version of Summerland).

Now trying to figure out what to do with these guys is a different story lol, since I've learned about them and knowing when to call on them and for what.

While there are some pantheons you probably wouldn't want to mix, I know a lot of people who have deity from different pantheons.  A lot of times people will be drawn to a type of deity and you can choose one from any of the pantheons.

I work with a few different goddesses and they are not all from the same pantheon.  Danu is my first goddess followed by Cerridwen, however I call on Isis as well as Bast and Hecate at times without a problem.  I've even done a couple of rituals to Kali when I was having some serious problems in my life.  Things turned around quickly after that.

I've heard of people who occasionally mix a god and a goddess from different pantheons in a Wiccan ritual. The important thing is to make sure they are compatible, which a god and  goddess might not be even if they're from the same pantheon. Ex:  Wanna make Hera and Zeus your deities during ritual?  Really?  Depends on Hera's mood and Zeus' flings.Zeus and Freyja might blend better.  You get the idea.  A Recon would see things differently though, LOL. Depends on your trad - just think things through.

I am so glad that I came across this thread as I was wondering why there where so many different types of God and Goddess and if there where different types of deity or if there was just one but each culture assigns them different names and images. you know, Eygpt Isis and Osiris. Greece, Diana and Zeus but reading these threads makes more sense. I have come to Paganisim/Wicca because Isis made herself known during a Rekei healing but I have always had a fascination with the moon (I could literally stare at it for hours. luckily I haven't turned to lunacy yet ;^)) so I am keen to explore more about Diana.

I have changed my mind on using Diana. I am now calling on Artemis, Selene, and Hecate seems more natural to use them together. I call on them for help with witchcraft, and call on the God and Goddess when practicing
Wicca and for morning and evening prayers. I know that seems like a lot, but I have a good relationship with each one. We all get along well.
