Bluedjango, if you're still around, I have to say I'm not entirely ignorant of mysticism either. I've read everything from Jakob Boehme to Sri Chinmoy to Ken Wilber, and taken two years' worth of meditation courses; the course leaders got very annoyed with me for asking questions they had no adequate answers for. "You're in your analyser; it gets in the way of (capital T) Truth", I was told, repeatedly. They seemed to forget that we humans come equipped with analysers for a very good reason; another name for "analyser" would be "baloney detector". We were discouraged from using our analysers, I decided, because it would have been just too easy for us to conclude that they were peddling snake oil and, of course, stop paying them money. Others combined a touching sincerity with appalling ignorance; I've been told, with a perfectly straight face, that "all food turns into sugar in the body", that an amethyst ring someone was wearing "isn't a crystal, it's a gemstone," and that beryl isn't a proper crystal because it doesn't have pointed ends. Sitting for hours in intense meditation with these people quickly lost any allure it might once have had (there was this beautiful exotic dark haired girl - but I digress).

Thus I came to the conclusion that mysticism was a waste of my time (and, incidentally, money), and had no real-world application to practical Witchcraft. I tended to agree with Robert Graves, who in his classic "The White Goddess" (page 479) described Samadhi (eastern mysticism) as "a psychopathic condition, a spiritual orgasm .... the most refined form of solitary vice imaginable." Harsh words perhaps; but justifiable in the circumstances.

Blessed Be everyone,

I guess what it comes down to is learning what it is to be one, and then start practicing it. When you practice, you become. Everyone has areas they are not exactly brilliant in when it comes to various skills of a witch. But if you start practicing regularly, daily, and living it... that is when you are.

Amberhawk I like this very much. Wish we had a like button.

Alchymist I always enjoy your posts. I found the "baloney detector" very amusing.

Thank you for your reply, in the form on non-prescriptive self-reflection ( meditation ) I engage in Mysticism is shunned.

I agree wholeheartedly !

Based on earlier chats elsewhere on this forum, when I was seeking out the details of what Wicca and Witchcraft are, as well as my own encounters with other seekers, it became clear that there is some degree of first encounter after witch 😊 one engages in what amounts to about the same as a three year degree -- obviously not everyone  is that academically able and a simple feeling in ones heart aught and healthy curiosity aught to be quite adequate

Well, no, not really. Wicca is a priesthood where as witchcraft is a practice. Being Wiccan does also incorporate the witchcraft but adds priestly duties to whichever deity or deities they follow.  Witches don't necessarily have to take up an entire priesthood mantel, just learn and study and practice the craft part.

it's also important to note that many who practice witchcraft are solitary. To gain confidence in practice means a lifetime of study and learning.
One may start learning from curiosity and that is simply a want to learn, but if there is no follow up with study, learning and practice there is no
basis for living. Actually living the craft is when we become. This is all as Amber said. But if the want to become is strong enough no one has to be a genius to study witchcraft. I believe we are all academically able, to say some are not is limiting and judgmental and can turn away some who may not be confident enough to pursue study on their own. I believe in helping those who are solitary to continue in their study of witchcraft. Even if all they need is a kind word of encouragement.

Probably my teenage years when I started practising witchcraft. Before that, I was still under the influence of my parent's religion as a youth, and thought of black magic and devil stuff when I heard the term.

I really don't know why this gets asked so much.  it's very simple. witchchacks practice witchcraft.  No witchcraft, no witch.  Everything else is just personal preference and window dressing.

I think it's asked so much because there is a long standing habit of screaming witch at people with psychic abilities, or at someone who behaves like a bitch, or someone others don't like... Most really don't have a clue what goes into it or if it is even real.

True, though if they bothered to read the definition it's right there.

What if the question is asked so much because it is more a seeking of reassurance that the Craft is really real? Maybe some need to hear it from real practitioners so they don't feel they will be mocked by their peers without cause.

It really depends which dictionary you are talking about. Some still have older versions. I saw one some years back that seemed to take the witches hammer too seriously... like biblical level religious text kind of seriously...

You still get many that think Witches worship the Devil . This still has strong roots in some country's where being said that your a Witch will get you killed . Home many people have come on here and said they feared to let people know what they were because of where they lived in this country .

I suspect it might have more to do with personal insecurities and that they need to be reassured that they are really real.   ;)

Given the overall hassles involved with taking on any label ... why not remain formless ?
