On Gods and Goddesses
« on: January 20, 2016, 06:36:44 AM »

I know there are many varying viewpoints on this, but I'm thinking about how the gods can be incorporated into my rituals, but I'm unsure. There's the Chaos half of me that thinks if a god/goddess speaks to me, has attributes that seem relevant to my query, etc it doesn't matter what culture they came from. Then there's my other half that doesn't really like that, it feels too...sporadic? Easy? I don't know.

If there were a culture I felt most connected to it would be the Celts, but less in known for sure about their gods and goddesses than say, the Greeks. So, in the current moment Hecate is very intriguing to me. The torches, the key, her portfolio are all super interesting, but I'm not even a little bit Greek, and feel like I'd be "doing it wrong" if I called on her...

I know there are some paths that follow only a few gods, some that follow many. I don't know. I'm figuring all this on my own, and haven't quite decided which way to go. Any thoughts, experiences, or practices would be appreciated.  :)

The path you follow is your own but do not expect to summon the God/dess you want , they are not to be summon . It is they who choose who they want to aide . If you want to know more about the Goddess of the Celt's then here are a few books you may want to check out . Just remember Magic is not about what you want , it's about what you need .

" Goddess Alive " and " Goddess Afoot " both by Michelle Skye , also " Sacred World Of The Celts " by Nigel Pennick .

If Heacte pull at you then you may want to stay with her , it could be what you need .

LS only you know which path to follow and which God/dess is best for you. But I can tell you that after bouncing around for some time
I decided to honor Hecate and request her assistance. She has been misunderstood I think by many.

Hecate holds the keys to all gateways and can guide us through the past, present and future. She has helped me through many difficult
transitions over the years. I honor her in darkness at three crossroads by leaving an offering. She has never failed me.

If you do choose her to guide you, she will protect you have no fear. As og said if you are feeling a connection with Hecate there must
be a reason. If you accept her, she can help you understand what you need.

og, I have no plans or expectations of summoning anyone, but Hecate, for whatever reason right now, seems like someone I could call on. It's stupid, but I guess I just wanted to hear a few people say, "If you think you should, then do it!" So, thank you, og and Marisol! I saw a sculpture of her as the triad and I don't know. Like, I said the torches, the key, gateways, they're all very appealing right now.

I've read a lot about Celtic gods and goddesses, but much out there seems added in much later, because so much of their culture was lost. Oral tradition and any written words written mostly on wood made it easy to get lost or muddled when Christianity took over. Either way, I will happily check out the books you suggested! Always looking for new reading material. :)

Thank you for the insights and encouragement, Mar. Much appreciated!

(I seem to come and go. Post for a few days, don't visit for a few weeks, but every time I have a new question I come back and get great answers! So happy I found this awesome resource!)

I very much agree with the statements above that you don't choose the god(dess), s(he) chooses you. Sometimes this comes as a bolt from the blue, sometimes you yourself have to send out an invitation or two and see if anyone answers.

If you are drawn to Hecate, do some serious research on Hecate and the civilization she came from.  Find out how she was worshiped, her myths and lore, favorite foods, colors, perfumes. People and other deities she clashes with (important!).  You may be very surprised to find Hecate is not at all as she is sometimes portrayed. Meditate, invite her to a ritual with special offerings or gifts, do something that will please her.  Then wait. See if she answers you in dreams, insights, strange coincidences, anything unusual. Be patient and continue your research and meditations.

Now, here's the funny thing .  As often as not, you'll be answered by someone other than the deity you were seeking.  Take it seriously.  Someone else was "listening in" and liked what s/he saw. Then start the process again with this unexpected deity, because you'll have a getting to know you phase ahead.

Your intuition and academic research are both important.  Blessings, and I hope you and your god/dess meet each other soon.

I should mention your partnership does not necessarily have to be for life. You will change as you grow and your personal deity(ies) may change.  That's fine, they aren't jealous.  Just keep any promises you made and continue to show respect even if you no longer work with them.

Lady Of Shalott . here is a book I think you would do well to read . " Hekate Liminal Rites : a study of the rituals , Magic and symbols of the torch-bearing triple Goddess of the crossroads " By Sorita D'Este.

If there is a safe place where you can find were two path cross each other in the woods and the weather is good . Go there on the night of the Dark of the Moon , if possible carry a torch ( yes one the has fire on the end ). Bring your dog with you , they are one of her sacred animals and if yours start to howl then she is near and dogs can see her . Stand in the middle of the crossroads and call to her .
You should call her Hekate Treyia .

Why the torch , it's one of her sacred symbols and she always travels with her black dogs . If you hear and owl then know it is her messenger .
