A priest visited [Italian philosopher] Niccolo Machiavelli on his deathbed. The priest urged Machiavelli to repent of his sins and renounce Satan. Machiavelli, eyes closed, said nothing. Again the priest implored, "Repent of your sins and renounce Satan." Still Machiavelli was silent. So the priest raised his voice and demanded "WILL YOU REPENT OF YOUR SINS AND RENOUNCE SATAN?" And finally Machiavelli opened one eye and whispered, "Father, at a time like this, one tries not to make new enemies."

"You see things, and you say, "Why?" I dream of things that never were, and say, "Why not?""

This quote, or something like it, is usually attributed to Sen. Robert Kennedy, but his brother (former U.S. President) John said it before him; but in fact neither of them originated it. It appears in the rarely performed (because impossibly long) play "Back to Methuselah" (1921), by George Bernard Shaw. In the play, these words are spoken to Eve by the Serpent of Genesis. Since both Robert and John were practising Catholic Christians, it seems kind of strange that they would use a quote from "The Devil."

The Serpent wasn't the Devil, of course; were they aware of that, do you think?
