As summer begins to fade, nature offers us countless signs that it is time to follow her into a new season. Around September 22 or 23, the Sun crosses the celestial equator and we reach the Autumn Equinox. Day and night stand close to equal, marking a turning point between the bright days of summer and the longer nights ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For those who follow the Wheel of the Year, this is Mabon, the second of the three harvest festivals. Lammas welcomed the beginning of the harvest season. Mabon celebrates its abundance, while Samhain marks the final harvest and our passage toward winter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Mabon is about more than a date on the calendar. The real celebration is happening all around us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

What Nature is Teaching Us<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

By the Autumn Equinox, nature is already responding to the changing light. When we slow down and pay attention, the changes taking place around us can offer lessons for our own lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is a time to let go.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leaves begin changing color and falling from the trees. Plants release their seeds, allowing the wind, animals and earth to carry them wherever they need to go. Nature doesn’t try to hold onto everything it created during the growing season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Autumn can remind us to look at what we are holding onto as well. Old worries, habits, expectations and even plans that no longer fit our lives can take up energy we could use elsewhere. Letting go doesn’t mean that something had no value. Like a leaf that has finished nourishing a tree, sometimes something has simply completed its season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is a time to gather what we need.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Animals are preparing too. Birds begin their migrations. Squirrels gather and store food. Other creatures eat more, grow heavier coats or seek places that will shelter them through the colder months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is wisdom in preparing before we are in need. We can ask ourselves what will support us during the months ahead. Perhaps we need to tend to our homes, strengthen relationships, finish an unfinished task or simply create more space in our lives for rest. Preparing for what is coming can be an act of care rather than worry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is a time to turn inward.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even plants that appear to be dying are preparing for what comes next. Perennials begin directing their energy toward their roots. Growth above the ground slows while important work continues where we cannot see it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our own growth doesn’t always have to be visible either. Autumn reminds us that there are seasons for doing and creating, but there are also seasons for reflection, learning and strengthening our roots. Stepping back from constant activity can give us the energy we need for whatever comes next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is a time to trust what has been planted.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seeds fall to the ground and settle into the earth. Some will remain there through the cold months before beginning a new cycle of growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We don’t always see immediate results from the things we begin. An idea, a new skill, a relationship or a dream may need time before it is ready to grow. Nature reminds us that waiting is sometimes part of the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is a time to appreciate the harvest.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

All around us, the results of the growing season are becoming visible. Fruits ripen, nuts fall and seeds mature. What began months ago has reached another stage in its journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our lives have harvests too. Mabon gives us a natural place to stop, acknowledge what we have grown and celebrate our accomplishments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nature is not simply ending a season. It is gathering, releasing, conserving, preparing and beginning again in ways that are not always visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When we celebrate the Autumn Equinox, we have an opportunity to do more than observe these changes. We can bring our own lives into closer rhythm with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps that begins simply by stepping outside and paying attention. The lessons of Mabon are already unfolding around us, reminding us that we, too, are part of nature’s changing seasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
