For the ancient Celtic peoples of Ireland and parts of Britain, this turning point was marked by Samhain, a seasonal festival held around the beginning of November that welcomed the dark half of the year.

Today, Samhain is one of the most important celebrations on the modern Pagan Wheel of the Year. Its roots, however, reach back many centuries to a time when the rhythms of daily life were closely connected to the earth and its seasonal cycles.

The End of Summer

The name Samhain comes from Old Irish and has long been associated with summer’s end and the beginning of winter. The traditional Celtic year was divided into a light half and a dark half, with Samhain standing at the threshold between them.

This brought practical changes as well. By this time, crops had been gathered and stored, and livestock were brought down from their summer pastures. Some animals would be kept through the winter, while others were slaughtered to provide food for the cold months ahead.

Samhain therefore marked more than a change in the weather. It was a turning point in the yearly cycle, when the work of growing and gathering gave way to preparing for the darker months ahead.

A Time for Celebrations

Samhain was also a time when communities came together. Historical Irish literature describes gatherings, feasting, and important seasonal events associated with Samhain.

Fire appears prominently in later accounts and folklore surrounding the festival as well. Hearth fires and communal fires carried practical importance as the cold season approached, while fire itself represented warmth, protection, and light during the growing darkness.

Imagine how meaningful that light must have seemed in a world without electricity. A glowing hearth represented warmth, food, family, and survival through the winter months.

From an Ancient Festival to the Witches’ New Year

Thousands of years have changed the way we live and celebrate Samhain, but its place at this turning point in nature still holds meaning for modern Pagans.

Today, many Wiccans, Witches and other Pagans celebrate Samhain as the Witches’ New Year. This is a modern Pagan tradition, influenced in part by the nineteenth-century idea that Samhain marked the beginning of the ancient Celtic year. The idea fits naturally with the season, as the harvest has been gathered, the growing year has reached its end, and the Earth pauses for a period of rest before life begins to emerge again.

Most of us no longer depend upon our own harvest to survive, but we can still observe the same cycles around us. Leaves fall. Daylight fades. Plants return to the earth, carrying seeds that will become new growth when their season comes again.

Samhain gives us an opportunity to recognize that endings have a place in the cycle of life. We can look back at what the past year has brought, appreciate what we have gathered along the way, and release what has reached its natural conclusion.

The ancient meaning of Samhain and the modern celebration of the Witches’ New Year align beautifully. As Mother Earth enters her season of rest during the dark half of the year, let’s honor what has passed and step with her into a new turn of the wheel.

Samhain Blessings to You!

As October arrives, the natural world begins settling into its darker season.
