Not long ago, a couple wrote to me with an interesting debate between them—whether or not a spell must be spoken aloud to be effective. It’s a question that comes up often, and I think it touches the heart of what magic truly is. Words have power, yes, but they are not the source of that power. They are simply one of many ways we focus and shape the energy that already flows through us.
Many people believe that speaking a spell aloud gives it added strength, and I understand why. The spoken word carries vibration, breath, and intent. It engages the physical body in the act of creation. When you speak a spell, you are sending your energy out into the world in sound form, and that can indeed give it more presence. In the same way, writing something down—carefully crafting the words of a petition or carving a symbol onto a candle—helps focus the will and solidify intent. These actions are beautiful tools, and they have meaning.
But I don’t believe they are necessary for magic to work.
Speaking and writing are human ways of communicating, but the universe does not need language to understand us. Magic, after all, is a conversation of energy, not words. The universe listens to our hearts, not our lips. It hears the pulse of our desire, the shape of our emotion, and the clarity of our will. When your intent is strong and your energy focused, the universe understands—whether you whisper your spell, shout it to the moon, or hold it silently within your chest.
In my experience, the spoken word is more for us than for the universe. Speaking can help us focus our minds and clarify our emotions. It gives shape to the feelings we want to send forth. Sometimes words are like stepping stones, helping us cross from confusion into certainty. Saying a spell aloud can make our intent feel more real, more present, and that in itself strengthens the magic. But it’s the feeling behind the words—the pulse of emotion and faith—that truly moves energy.
Most of the magic we experience in our daily lives happens quietly. It comes from the unspoken wishes, the silent gratitude, the energy we carry in our hearts as we move through the world. When you dwell on fear, resentment, or doubt, those feelings radiate outward and shape your experiences accordingly. And when you cultivate love, joy, and gratitude, the universe mirrors those energies back to you. Whether or not a word is spoken, the magic is always at work.
So, if you ever find yourself in a place where you can’t speak your spell—perhaps in a shared home, a public space, or simply because silence feels sacred—know that your magic is no less powerful. Sit quietly. Feel your intent rise within you. See it in your mind’s eye. Let your heart pulse with the emotion behind your desire, and send it forth. The universe is listening.
Sometimes the most profound spells are the ones whispered only in the soul.
