Secret Messages From Plants

“…that most precious gift of your Earthly Mother is the grass beneath your feet, even that grass which you tread upon without thought. Humble and meek is this messenger of Earth, for she has no wings to fly, nor golden rays of light to pierce the mist. But great is her strength and vast is her domain, for she covers the earth with her power…” Gospel of Peace Book 4

To receive messages from plants you must listen with your body, mind and spirit. The humble grass you walk on can help you relax and renew your energy. Trees will invite you to take comfort in their shade on a hot summer day or offer you protection from the rain or wind on a stormy afternoon. The beauty and aroma of flowers can bring you pleasant feelings and help draw your thoughts away from the day’s stress. Many plants and herbs have healing powers to share with you. The more you learn about them, the healthier your life can be.

These messages of healing, comfort, strength and natural wisdom are usually felt or seen rather than heard. The spirits of plants, trees and grass call to each of us. Their energy resonates with us and through them, Mother Earth happily share her secrets with us.

Below are a couple of quotes from a little girl named Opal who grew up in a town in Oregon. Her diary is full of encounters with plants, animals and the elements. She wrote from a child’s perspective about the messages she received from them and how they make her feel.

“I lay my ear close to the earth where the grasses grew close together. I did listen. The wind made ripples on the grass as it went over. There were voices from the earth and the things of their saying were the things of gladness of growing. …I have thinks all the grasses growing there did feel glad feels from the tips of their green arms to their toe roots in the ground.”

“There by the dim trail grow the honeysuckles. I nod to them as I go that way. In the daytime I hear them talk with sunbeams and the wind. They talk in shadows with the little people of the sun. This I have learned — grown-ups do not know the language of shadows.”

Opal was right that most grown-ups do not know the language of the shadows or hidden things. Children on the other hand, love to explore and question everything. For them, life seems to be full of magic. Have you ever asked yourself where that magic went? When we grow up, our lives can become so busy that we barely notice the earth beneath our feet or the flowers we walk by, let alone stop to listen to the grass, or explore what’s going on behind the scene in the shadows. The magic doesn’t leave our lives. Most of us simply choose to ignore it and move on to other grown-up activities.

If magic is a rare commodity in your life, perhaps it’s time to slow down and pay more attention to the grass, trees, plants and flowers again. Let them share their messages and “glad feels” with you. Enjoy their beauty, aroma and the energy they send your way. Mother Earth gives these gifts freely and you may just find that when you pause long enough to receive them, magic is still there waiting for you!
