Have you ever wondered what you were being protected from when you cast a ‘protective’ circle? Are evil spirits lurking or is it just bad energy?
My first experience with casting a circle brought up this very
subject. Someone close to me wanted to cast a circle and call on
the Goddess. I wanted to observe this practice, and sat down outside the circle to watch as I enjoyed the warm evening and the stars above. But then I was informed that I should be inside the circle where I would be protected. I was raised a Christian and this comment initially reinforced what I had been taught growing up … that earth religions were dealing with ‘evil spirits’.
Fortunately, as I continued to learn more about casting circles and other practices, my fears melted away. I came to understand that the circle was basically a mental energy field you use to surround your self with love and positive energy while you work.
Drawing a circle, or setting candles in a circle on the ground around you, is a practice many use to help define their personal space. it’s a sacred work space. a place where you can leave behind the mundane world and any negative energy you may have accumulated during the day. This allows you to focus on raising the positive energy you want to send forth into the universe.
Sadly, it seems Hollywood managed to sensationalized the protective circle. The negative energies from our day became ‘evil’ spirits that were lurking at the outer edges of the circle. This dramatic image does not portray an accurate description of the circle’s true purpose. Practitioners should be focused on the positive work they are doing within the circle and not worrying about any negative energy they may have left outside the circle.
The best protection from ‘evil’ or negative energy we encounter throughout our day is the circle of love and positive energy we surround ourselves with. This is a circle that can go with us anywhere and If our circle is strong, others will feel it when they are near us.
