Write Your Own Spells for Powerful Magic

Most of us who write spells have experienced a moment when we sit down, pen in hand, candles lit… and suddenly we find our mind is as blank as the page in front of us. We talk. all day with friends, with pets, with ourselves — yet when it’s time to communicate with the Divine through a spell, suddenly it feels like everything has to be profound, poetic, or perfectly mystical.

But in fact, the Universe doesn’t really care how our spells are phrased, because magic isn’t carried by vocabulary; it’s carried by emotion, belief, clarity, and intention.

Words are important primarily because of the way they make us feel. If the phrasing stirs our heart, lifts our energy, or anchors our focus, then our spell becomes powerful. If the words leave us feeling flat, disconnected, or confused, the Universe notices that too — ignoring our written words and responding to the emotional current behind them.

Quiet Magic

Not long ago, a couple wrote to me with an interesting debate between them—whether or not a spell must be spoken aloud to be effective. It’s a question that comes up often, and I think it touches the heart of what magic truly is. Words have power, yes, but they are not the source of that power. They are simply one of many ways we focus and shape the energy that already flows through us.

Many people believe that speaking a spell aloud gives it added strength, and I understand why. The spoken word carries vibration, breath, and intent. It engages the physical body in the act of creation. When you speak a spell, you are sending your energy out into the world in sound form, and that can indeed give it more presence. In the same way, writing something down—carefully crafting the words of a petition or carving a symbol onto a candle—helps focus the will and solidify intent. These actions are beautiful tools, and they have meaning.

But I don’t believe they are necessary for magic to work.

Our spirit is more than just the thought-energy within us. It is actually linked to a universal network of energy. This network has been referred to by many names, including the Akashic Records, the Book of Life, the Universal Mind and the Field. It has been described as a universal filing system that has been recording every occurring thought, word and action since the beginning of time. Today, scientists might think of this record as the DNA of the universe. We can debate all day about how to describe it or what to call it, but what is most important is that we have the ability to connect to this source of Divine wisdom through the Spirit.

Intuition is an important line of communication to the Divine. It’s the ability to know or sense something without the use of rational processes. This ability has also been referred to as a gut-feeling, your inner-voice, your higher-self, or even your guardian angel. The name you give this quiet voice within really doesn’t matter, as long as you understand that this is how the Divine often communicates with you. Learning to listen to and follow your intuition can provide you with the wisdom and guidance of a higher power as you face the challenges of everyday life.

One With the Goddess

Excerpt from Talking to the Goddess by Kardia Zoe

“With the eyes and ears of the spirit do you see and hear the sights and sounds of the kingdom of the Earthly Mother: The blue sky where dwells the messenger of Air, the foaming river where flows the messenger of Water, the golden light which streams from the messenger of Sun. And I tell you truly, all these are within you as well as without; for your breath, your blood, the fire of life within you, all are one with the Earthly Mother.” Quote from Book #4 Teaching of the Elect

The quote above is from a manuscript that is nearly 2000 years old. . In this ancient writing we are told to use the eyes and ears of the spirit to see and hear the Earthly Mother (aka Goddess) and her messengers.  At first I did not truly know what this meant. Were the eyes and ears of the spirit different from those of our physical body? Then I realized what this passage was trying to say.

To receive messages from plants you must listen with your body, mind and spirit. The humble grass you walk on can help you relax and renew your energy. Trees will invite you to take comfort in their shade on a hot summer day or offer you protection from the rain or wind on a stormy afternoon. The beauty and aroma of flowers can bring you pleasant feelings and help draw your thoughts away from the day’s stress. Many plants and herbs have healing powers to share with you. The more you learn about them, the healthier your life can be.
